Using the Hands-Free Camera Barcode Scanner

Membrzs Market can scan a product's barcode with your device's camera and add it straight to the cart, no manual search needed.

1. Opening the Scanner

  1. From the POS screen, tap ▦ Scan above the product grid.
  2. The first time you use it, your device will ask for camera permission — tap Grant Permission if the app shows its own prompt. If your back camera isn't available (or permission is denied), the scanner shows an explanation instead of a live camera feed.
  3. Once active, point your camera at a barcode inside the highlighted scan window in the middle of the screen.

2. Scanning Items

  1. Hold the barcode steady inside the corner brackets — the app reads it automatically, there's no shutter button to press.
  2. On a successful match, the scanner flashes a confirmation (e.g. "✓ {product name} added") and the item is added to your cart, staying open so you can keep scanning more items.
  3. If the barcode doesn't match anything in your catalog, or the product is sold out, the scanner flashes an error message instead (e.g. "✗ No product with barcode {code}" or "✗ {product name} is sold out") and nothing is added.
  4. Scanning a weight-priced product's barcode closes the scanner and opens the weight-entry prompt for that item instead of adding it directly — see the weight-priced checkout article.
  5. The same code won't be added twice in a row from an accidental double-read — there's a short cooldown before the same barcode can be scanned again.
  6. Tap Cancel at the bottom of the screen when you're done scanning.

3. Setting Up Barcodes on Products

The scanner only recognizes barcodes you've attached to a product. Add or edit a barcode from Config > Products in the app (or Products in the Web Portal) when creating or editing a product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What barcode formats are supported?

Common retail formats including UPC-E, EAN-13, EAN-8, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, QR codes, Data Matrix, and PDF417.

Does this work offline?

Yes — scanning matches against your locally cached product catalog and doesn't require a network connection. Only the resulting sale (for card payments) needs connectivity.
