Issuing Incremental Partial Refunds

Partial Refund lets you return a specific dollar amount from an order — separately from voiding the whole thing — and you can issue more than one against the same order over time.

1. When to Use a Partial Refund Instead of a Void

Use Partial Refund when only part of an order needs to be returned (a missing item, a pricing correction, a goodwill adjustment) rather than reversing the whole sale. It's available on any order that's still Paid or already Partial Refund status — unlike Void & Refund, it stays available even after a previous partial refund has been issued, as long as there's still a refundable balance left.

Like voids, a partial refund is issued through Stripe against the order's card charge, so a fully cash-tendered order (no card component) can't be partially refunded through the app either.

2. Issuing a Partial Refund

Web Portal:

  1. Go to Orders, expand the order, and click Partial Refund.
  2. In the dialog, enter the refund amount in dollars. The dialog shows the order total and, if anything's already been refunded, that running total too.
  3. Click Issue Refund.

Mobile:

  1. Open the Orders tab, expand the order, and tap Partial Refund.
  2. The sheet shows Order total, Already refunded (if applicable), and Refundable — the remaining balance you're allowed to return.
  3. Enter a dollar amount and tap Refund $X.XX.

You can't enter more than the current refundable balance — both platforms cap the amount and show an error if you try to exceed it (e.g. "Max refundable is $12.50.").

3. Issuing Multiple Partial Refunds Over Time

Partial refunds accumulate. Each one you issue is tracked individually, and the order always shows the running total refunded so far alongside the original order total — so you (and the customer, via their receipt) can always see exactly how much has come back versus what was originally charged. Once the total refunded reaches the full order amount, the order's status automatically becomes Voided; until then, it stays in Partial Refund status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a limit to how many partial refunds I can issue on one order?

No hard limit — you can issue as many as you like, as long as each one doesn't push the running total past the order's original amount.

What happens if I refund the full remaining balance through Partial Refund instead of Void?

The order's status flips to Voided automatically once the refunded total reaches the order total — functionally the same end state as using Void & Refund directly.
