Tap to Pay on the Freemium Plan
The Freemium plan includes 5 Tap to Pay sales per month at no extra cost — a way to try accepting contactless cards and digital wallets on your phone before deciding whether to upgrade.
What's included
- 5 Tap to Pay transactions per calendar month. Both approved and declined attempts count toward the 5.
- No added fee. The $0.15 Tap to Pay fee that applies on Lite, Premium, and Team is waived for Freemium's monthly allowance, and Stripe's per-tap network cost is credited back — so a Tap to Pay sale on Freemium costs you exactly the same as any other Freemium card sale (3.0% + $0.15).
- Works on the same devices as any other plan — an eligible iPhone, or an Android phone/tablet with NFC. See Setting Up Apple Tap to Pay on iPhone and Setting Up Tap to Pay on Android.
When it resets
The count resets on the 1st of each month (UTC). Unused sales don't roll over — you get a fresh 5 at the start of every month.
You can see how many you have left on the Reader tab in the app, and on the Billing page in the Web Portal.
After you've used all 5
Nothing breaks — you just can't start another Tap to Pay sale until the month resets:
- The Charge Card button falls back to manual card entry (type the card number, expiry, and CVC). Manual entry works on every plan and needs only an internet connection.
- Cash sales are unaffected.
- The Reader tab shows "Free Tap to Pay used up" with the reset date and an upgrade option.
To remove the cap, upgrade to Lite ($9.99/mo) or higher, which includes unlimited Tap to Pay. See Managing Vendor Plan Tiers & Seat Limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do declined taps use up my allowance?
Yes. Each attempt counts, whether the card is approved or declined — but you're never charged the Tap to Pay fee for either.
What happens to a sale I start but the customer never taps?
If the payment is canceled before a card is presented, that attempt is released and doesn't count against your 5.
Can I buy more than 5 without upgrading?
No — the allowance is fixed at 5/month on Freemium. Lite and above include unlimited Tap to Pay.
Does this work on Android?
Yes, on Android phones and tablets with NFC hardware, exactly like on iPhone. See Setting Up Tap to Pay on Android.
