Managing Tax-Exempt Produce & Food Items

Flag individual products as exempt from sales tax — common for fresh produce, unprepared food, and other locally tax-exempt goods.

1. Turning On Tax Collection

Tax exemption only matters once sales tax is enabled for your account:

  1. Go to Config > Tax.
  2. Turn on Collect Sales Tax.
  3. Set your rate — either type it directly under Tax Rate, or use Look Up Rate by Zip Code: enter a 5-digit zip and tap Look Up to see the combined state/county/city rate for that area, then tap it to apply it.
  4. Under Behaviour, choose whether pricing is Tax-Inclusive (prices already include tax) and whether tax shows as its own line on the receipt (Show Tax on Receipt).
  5. Tap Save Changes.

2. Marking a Product Tax-Exempt

Exemptions are set per product, not account-wide:

  1. Open the product in Config > Products (or the Web Portal's Products page).
  2. Turn on the Tax Exempt toggle (mobile) or check the Tax exempt checkbox (Web Portal).
  3. Save the product.

Once marked, that product is excluded from sales tax at checkout, regardless of your overall tax rate. Common candidates are fresh produce, unprepared food, and farm goods — check your local and state rules for what actually qualifies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I see which products are tax-exempt?

There's no separate exemptions list — check the Tax Exempt toggle on each product's own edit screen.

Does tax-exempt status change per market location?

No — it's a property of the product itself, not tied to a specific market or session.

Who can change tax settings?

Only Owners can access Config > Tax. Tax-exempt status on an individual product can be changed by Owners and Managers when editing that product.
