Configuring Card Payment Tip Prompts
Turn on tipping so sellers can add a tip to any sale — a preset percentage or a custom dollar amount — before completing checkout.
1. Turning Tips On or Off
Tips are a single vendor-wide setting, not something configured per card reader or per session.
- Go to Config > Operations in the app.
- In the Payments card, toggle Tips. The description in the app is explicit that this applies "across all payment methods including cash" — it's not limited to card payments.
- Tap Save Changes.
2. How the Tip Prompt Works at Checkout
- With Tips on, an optional + Add Tip link appears at the bottom of the cart next to + Add Discount — it's opt-in, not an automatic pop-up when you start checkout.
- Tapping it opens a prompt with three preset percentages — 10%, 15%, and 20% — each showing the calculated dollar amount, computed off the subtotal after any discount and before tax.
- There's also a Custom Amount field for entering a specific dollar tip, or tap No Tip to skip.
- Once a tip is selected, the link changes to show the tip amount (e.g. "Tip: $3.00") and can be tapped again to change it. The tip is added to the order total across every tender type — card, cash, and split tender.
- The tip option doesn't appear at all on a fully comped or fully discounted (free) order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I set a different tip default for card vs. cash sales?
No — Tips is a single on/off setting that applies the same way regardless of how the customer pays.
Does Membrzs take a cut of tips?
Yes, on Enterprise plans where the buyer pays card fees, the tip amount is included in the same fee calculation as the rest of the order — it isn't carved out separately.
